In this section you will find information on how I care for my rats. Any examples of cages, food, bedding, or toys are things that have worked for me and my colony over the years and are only suggestions.
Housing

One houses four males, the other is home to 3 females. It is spacious and decently constructed for the price, as well as easy to clean. The bar spacing is small enough that young rats cannot escape. I have tried other cages over the years, such as a large modified parrot cage and other "small pet" cages, but this is my personal favorite right now. The rats seem to like it too.
Tanks/aquariums should not be used as permanent housing for your rats. The lack of air flow allows ammonia to build up and will cause damage to a rat's delicate respiratory system. They also do not provide climbing opportunities for active rats.
